Create The Coolest Easter Craft Ever With Some Eggs And A Few Silk Ties

Everyone loves dyeing Easter eggs, but the folks over at SALT Project knew that this old standby was due for an upgrade.

These crafters came up with a decidedly elegant take on the classic decorated egg to ring in Easter the right way. Instead of fussing with messy dyes and store-bought kits, they rounded up a few scraps of silk and used vinegar to transfer gorgeous patterns onto eggshell canvases.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 dozen white eggs
  • assortment of silk ties or scarves
  • thin string or twine
  • sheet of white cotton
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup of vinegar
  • rubber bands

1. Cut the ties and scarves into squares that are large enough to wrap around each egg.

2. Wrap the eggs with silk, and make sure that the bright side’s touching the shell. Secure with rubber bands.

3. Grab your string and coil it around the eggs. This will ensure that silk is touching the entire surface of the shell.

4. Cut your sheet of white cotton into squares that are about the same size as the silk ones. Cover the eggs with those as well and secure each one with rubber bands.

5. Bring the water and vinegar to a boil.

6. Simmer for 30 minutes, remove, let them cool, and unwrap!
